High River is a town about 30 minutes drive from the south of Calgary just off Highway 2 (which links the cities of Calgary and Lethbridge) and has a population approaching 11,000 people. High River was incorporated as a village back in 1902 and the town therefore has quite a bit of history. The town centre, on the banks of the Highwood River (where Centre Street and Macleod Trail converge), is the older part of town, while the newer communities are on the edge of town.
With almost 25% of the towns population between the ages of 25 and 44 and almost 14% in the age range of 5 to 14 years High River is a very family orientated town.
There is a varied employment base within High River including retail, service sector, light industrial and agricultural. One of the largest employers in the area is the meat processing plant just to the north of town.
There are several schools, a hospital, two golf courses, fairgrounds, leisure centre, a museum, a library and various parks, green spaces and lakes.
As with other towns that are further out from Calgary High River offers good value for money when it comes to housing. For those who want to live and work in a rural town, or those who want to live in High River and are happy to commute to work in Calgary - High River would be a good choice to call home.
